Garmin Aerial GPS vs Nuvi vs Bendix King
This is a very difficult subject and one that has taken many hours of research by all the crew, especialy me.
We started by checking out the Garmin 196 and 296 models. Great though they are we found that there just wasn't enough detail for us when flying at 20-50mph. These units seemed to be designed for other aircraft flying at higher speeds but for us there just didn't seem to be the kind of detail that we needed.
We also looked at other systems that work on palm top and notebook PC's. But some systems only did certain maps of the world and not others so the quest still goes on. |
With that said we also looked at the Bendix-king AV8ER, but sadly they didn't have that one in stock when we went so we will have to look another day.
It was only when I was messing about with my car satnav that I put it into offroad mode that I noticed that it could be used for aerial navigation. We have used it a couple of times and it seems to work very well indeed. The only problem is that there is no airspace on it which means that we still have to fly with a map, but then you're supposed to anyway. We use the airmaps to plan the route then put it into Google Earth and then transfer it as a route to the Nuvi 770. It's a bit of a faff but it seems to work for the time being. We are still waiting to see the Bendix-King. |
